INFESTATION!

Newton's Third Law states that, 'for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.'

The gravity of this observation cannot be overstated because it can be used in so many ways and in so many fields.

It is the fundamental law used in aeronautics and space travel, as well as boxing matches and schoolyard fights.

Another, not so famous law, albeit not taught in school, comes from George Orwell's classic novella, "Animal Farm."

I hope everyone has read it. If not, hurry and do so before it is banned.

"Animal Farm" teaches us that while all men (creatures) are created equal, some are more equal than others!

Perhaps Mr. Orwell was alluding to America's valuation of the African slave population of the late 1700's and 1800's who were ruled to be worth only three fifths of a person.

This ended, although it still exists in practice today, to a degree, when the North defeated their brethren in the South and the 14th amendment to the Constitution was ratified. It explicitly repealed the 'non-equal' status of the former slave.

However, the action of repealing the 3/5 compromise caused a reaction that led to the Jim Crow Laws.

Separate but still not equal status of the African American started to crumble when Harry Truman directed the military to accept and treat all members of the armed forces as equal in 1948.

And the crack really widened with the Supreme Court's 1954 ruling in Brown v Board of Education.

The Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act and Fair Housing Act, all passing while Lyndon Johnson sat in the White House, supposedly put an end to all legal discrimination based on race back in the late 1960's.

Each of those acts caused reactions felt to this day.

The next war front emerged for all to see and hear, when women decided they needed to be treated as equal to men and started stating this out loud, very loud in the early 1900's.

Starting just after the Civil War when African American men were given the right to vote by the 15th amendment, the women's suffrage movement began.

Once again, the action of ONLY ensuring men a new right caused women to react in a wave that extended into the 20th century.

The 19th amendment, written up in 1919 but not ratified until 1920, finally allowed women the right to vote.

While all the above rights were won after long dangerous and deadly fights, their continuation has been under attack since inception.

They require diligence and vigilance to ensure their lasting effect on the lives of all Americans.

But just as George Orwell warned of dangers and potholes in the road to a free and fair Democracy, so too does Margaret Atwood in her cautionary "The Handmaid's Tale".

In America we control our bodies.

Our laws protect others from harm we might inflict, or attempt to inflict, on others.

But for some reason this seemingly simple principle does not extend to our elected officials!

It was not until 1973, 49 years ago, that women were finally granted the legal right to control their own bodies with regards to that uniquely feminine act of childbirth.

That was the year the Supreme Court of the United States of America ratified into law the legalization across the land of the procedure known as abortion.

Commonly called Roe v Wade this law finally freed females from back-alley abortions and the use of hangers in a grotesque and dangerous way.

This right and the action of granting it to women caused the immediate reaction from a large group of hypocritical men, and sadly some self-disrespecting women, who call themselves Evangelicals.

Together with their allies of the radical right, they have been plotting, fighting, complaining, and chipping away at this settled law, ever since day one of its existence.

Little by little they found footholds in the Repub Party, which basically had nothing with regards to moving America forward since the 1980's.

They kept proposing bills in State legislatures across the country with a dual desire to please their so-called righteous base and keep or gain local power.

Finally, through a conglomeration of strange and dangerous liaisons, foreign and domestic, they were able to find and ensure the promotion to the Presidency of a puppet with absolutely no moral compass and no desire to help anyone but himself, his friends and his family gather and hide wealth.

While this minority elected, twice impeached president presided over the land, the final three nails in the coffin of justice were appointed as Justices to sit for life on The Supreme Court of America. (Note: Repub Presidents Bush and Bush appointed the other 2 nails.) 

Finally, the radical right had all the pieces in place to end the first right in their sights, that of women to control their bodies.

Soon Gilead will not just be a village in Nebraska but a metaphor for America!

Ms. Atwood never intended her tale to be a primer, but unless the women of America wake up it will become the textbook of choice for the country.

Will this finally be the act that causes the reaction necessary to save our Democracy?

Don't just wring your hands, maidens, YELL, SCREAM, REACT.

AND WHILE YOU ARE STILL ALLOWED TO VOTE, VOTE!

AND USE THAT VOTE AS YOU WOULD A POWERFUL INSECT REPELLENT TO RID AMERICA OF THE REPUBLICAN & CONSERVATIVE INFESTATION.

REMEMBER EVERY TIME YOU GO TO THE POLLS, AND IN EVERY STATE AND LOCAL PRIMARY.

AND OF COURSE

REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER!

Republicans Must Not Hold America Hostage Any Longer

According to the Stockholm Syndrome if one is held hostage by an evil person or group long enough the person may start to exhibit protective tendencies of one's captors.  In fact after a while a strange sort of irrational love may even develop.
Once set free the hostage must seek or be afforded psychiatric help to return to a normal productive life.
For the past 6 years America has been held hostage by the Republican Party and too many voters are exhibiting the same mental defect described above.  They are answering polls showing how much they would vote for the same Republican party that blocked any and all progress in America all the while blaming President Obama.
And just like a kidnapper who brainwashes a child into believing his real parents deserted him and do not love him anymore they have convinced their base that the President is not only at fault but not even an America citizen or worse!!
Polls show that Congress has a favor-ability rating less than that of gonorrhea or root canals so why would any sane, rational human being listen to them let alone vote for them again.
Perhaps the answer lies in the question itself and the words sane and rational.
Is it possible that the majority of the Republican base is so consumed with hatred and sublimated racism that they are willing to believe anything bad said about the President to the point of voting against their own best interests?
The answer to that is a resounding yes!
We have seen this happen over and over again and even read about it in a now famous (or should be famous) book by Thomas Frank.
In Florida, that wonderful State that gave us the hanging chads, Kat Harris and appointed a President that did not win the majority of votes we are now witness to a Governor with a terribly low approval rating leading in the polls due to $26 million worth of negative ads about his far better and more deserving opponent.
Generally when a candidate ONLY runs negative ads it's because he has nothing positive to say about himself. That could not be more true than in this race between a generally hated awful Governor Rick Scott and his 'for the people' foe Charlie Crist.
Neither man is a saint but then they are both politicians.
However when push comes to shove Mr. Scott is awful and deserves to be shown the door as soon as possible!
And speaking of awful, in Kentucky it is quite possible that another member of the hostage takers may hold his seat in Congress even though he has said publicly and in private that his entire agenda is to hurt the President and keep America down.
He will stop us from doing anything for at least the next two years and affirmed his affections for the anti-social Koch brothers and their bribe money with a treatise of love and promises to help them increase their massive fortune! He aims to block any regulations aimed at reining in business at the expense of the environment and human lives!
And this creature is leading in the polls?
As for the President's foreign policy is it so terrible to think about all the consequences of bombing other countries and starting or entering a war before actually doing so?  Haven't we been there done that already?  And aren't we and the World still paying for the rash ill-advised behavior of the previous war mongering administration?
Who died and made the United States the sheriff at the O K Coral?
If the President can make his case to World leaders and have them join us thus spreading the responsibilities as well as the costs are we not all better off?  Do we wish to send our young men and women into another far off battleground?
We have already been through two World Wars.  If the World cannot come together to squash small factions hell bent on global destruction in the name of some absurd religious belief then shall never have World peace.
Think of what a united Planet Earth could accomplish if testosterone driven machismo, personal greed and religious zealotry could be relegated to an embarrassing footnote in the annals of history.
It may be naive to think this could happen but at least I am not giving in and falling for my abductors!

The New Hammer

Boehner & co. keep saying the President got his revenue increase, AKA tax hike in January and now it is time for the spending cuts or the taking away of money from programs aimed at helping the middle class and poor.

Why does no one call him out on this obvious lie?

What happened in January was the Bush tax cuts that were created to expire by Bush and Boehner’s Republican Party and approved by them at that time expired!

These tax cuts were put into effect by this party’s leader as a gift to his base in the top 1%, financially speaking at the same time that he and they lied us into their illegal unfunded, unjust war that has killed far more than just thousands of our children, it killed our economy as well.

President Obama and the Democrats had to waste precious time fixing what the Republican recklessness cost, at least economically speaking as no amount of policy changes can bring back the lives of those brave soldiers Bush sent to their death in search of WMD he knew did not exist!

Now we are faced with an even more insidious Republican Party digging in and demanding more pain for the lower and middle classes in favor of their wealthiest friends.

When will this stop?

When will the media call out these self-serving hypocrites for their ‘oh so obvious’ lies?

When will the public finally understand that when Mitt Romney secretly, he thought, spoke to his friends about the hated 47% of Americans he was actually thinking about the party line of 98% hated Americans!

Because if you are not among the top tier of wealthiest Americans who can fund their life style YOU DO NOT EXIST FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!

And to that group of persona non-grata should be added minorities, gays, women, and anyone in the news media who reports facts!

And I beseech anyone with a brain to analyze the facts so that when November 2014 rolls around they will not be foolish enough to vote against their best interests and future ever again.

So no Mr. Boehner, the President did not get his revenue increase in January you did, and you know damned well you did!

And as always you are using lies to once again shield those who can most afford to chip in and aid the country’s recovery from ever having to open their wallets again.

Shame on you Mr. Speaker, shame on you!

Suppression, It's Only Good in Cough Medicine.

I would like nothing better than having the entire world bow to my will.
To some degree the above egotistical wish is in all of us.
But the obvious truth is that will never happen no matter who we are or think we are.  And that is of course a good thing.
Throughout history many have tried it from Alexander the Great to the not so great would-be Alexanders of our time.

Should this be the face
of World domination?

All political or religious dictators want the same control over their environs and the degree to which they impose their will determines their fate as well as ours.
While typically the means by which these tyrants wield their power is physical force do not discount the use of mental anguish and fear of the other guy as an important factor.
And while World domination has become harder to even contemplate controlling one's own world, the sphere within which one lives, is still in play.
We see this tactic in use every day by the Fox network of right wing entertainment news media people as directed by their mogul, Rupert Murdoch. His agenda is and for quite some time has been domination of all he can get his fingers on or near.
We cannot turn a closed eye to the inherent dangers in allowing any one person or small cadre of people enough power to control every aspect of our lives.
The experiment that is America started with the idea that no one body of government should be allowed complete control without oversight and acceptance by two other bodies.  And even then rules and laws must pass inspection, the smell test if you will of our Supreme Court.
Sadly even that august body has become politicized in the wake of the increased polarization of our political system.

But we at least America has not yet devolved into the toilet of religious control as has happened in many Muslim countries.
While women in America are targeted by right wing politicians for unnecessary medical procedures to keep them in line and stop them from having a say in their own bodies at least we have not started to actively hunt them down and kill them.
This week in Pakistan a group of lower than low-life creatures even Neanderthals would be ashamed to be associated with who call themselves the Taliban boarded a school bus to seek out and shoot to kill 14 year old Malala Yousafzai whose crime was she desired an education.
The cowardly act of this religious political coalition of scum and the devil has made the world sit  up and take note, for at least the current news cycle.
Malala defied the odds and lived through the heinous act but both she and her father remain under death threats from the Taliban.
They are so afraid of allowing humans an education because they rightfully fear that knowledge will prove them unworthy of life on this Earth.
But they may have actually taught  larger lesson than the ones they have attempted to suppress.
It is too early to predict the outcome of this disgusting episode but already young girls around the world are declaring themselves to be Malala!
Not nearly as graphic but almost as desperate are the tactics being used by business owners in America basically threatening their employees with their jobs if they do not support the boss' candidate in the upcoming elections.
Demanding money or unpaid time off to make mandatory appearances at fund raisers for candidates NOT OF THEIR CHOICE is tantamount to suppression of ideas and ideals.
The use of fear of loss of income to turn someone's opinion is reprehensible and un-American.
But this IS America and therefore the act, considered to be free speech is protected under our enlightened law.
But do not mistake legal for moral.
Charles Dickens once famously stated in "Oliver Twist" that, "The Law is a ass!"
And the suppression movement of the right wing sector of the Republican Party has not stopped with company-wide threats.  They have actively sought out to destroy labor unions and other Democratic leaning voter groups.  And in case that failed they have attempted to stop obvious Democratic voters from even being allowed to cast their ballots.
They claim they are trying to stop voter fraud, a noble cause indeed.

But to date the only party that has successfully utilized voter fraud to steal elections has been the Republican Party most notably when George Bush was anointed king of the White House not by hundreds of millions of votes but by a 5 to 4 decision from a friendly Supreme Court as requested by one individual, Florida's State Attorney General Katherine Harris.

Anytime someone tries to stop someone else from expressing themselves; or bettering themselves as in getting an education; or from listening other view points be they supporting their own opinions or opposing them; or merely by voting as they themselves wish IT IS WRONG!
Suppression must be called out and reported every time it is used or attempted.
It must be declared as evil and un-American or America as we know it will cease to exist.

Corporate Baggage

Airlines will make around $3B more this year charging for bags. This is a revenue stream that did not exist before deregulation of the industry and another example of a ‘BWC’ fee. That stands for my ‘Because We Can’ invention that covers every raise or surcharge or rate increase the public is forced to endure while the raisers of those costs reap ever increasing profits for ever decreasing services merely, well because they can.  Who's going to stop them?

Gold Mine for Airlines

I don’t have the exact figure on how much the airlines pay baggage handlers whose numbers have dwindled due to corporate cost analyses but I am willing to bet they don’t share in the windfall.
The airlines will say that the increase in fuel costs caused their increase in fees but the numbers don’t completely add up and even if they did why hide the fare increase?

Telling a traveler that he has to pay extra to carry some luggage is like selling a car and then asking the buyer if he’d like a steering wheel with his purchase.

But airlines are not the only culprit in this corporate scheme to milk humans out of every remaining penny they have.

Anyone alive on Long Island is well aware of the inept Long Island Rail Road and it's ever increasing fares to complement their ever decreasing level of service or competence.

Note that the railroad considers its trains to be on time if they are only 5.9 minutes late!
Most riders would not 5.9 minutes late as on-time but rather a miracle!

But I digress.

A quick check into the business world reveals that most corporations have amassed unprecedented and record profits; cash cushions of nearly unimaginable amounts all while claiming that the current administration in DC has left them with a terrible feeling of uncertainty that is causing them to NOT hire new workers.

Does not knowing if you will triple your profits rather than merely doubling them next year constitute an uncertainty?

This absurd rationalization pervades every corner of every industry and threatens to eradicate the middle class completely.

But while I and many others write about the path we’re on nobody seems to have a solution.

One reason is that a major political party doesn't see the above AS a problem to be fixed.

The Republicans feel that the business world and the banks in particular should not be regulated at all, or if so we should allow them to self regulate.

Millions of potholes nationwide

Sounds like Mr. Romney’s call for illegal aliens to self-deport and equally as naive.

One possible solution to the job loss in America is right under our noses or rather under our feet.

Suddenly not an uncommon thing

Our nation’s infrastructure (a word former President Bush had trouble even saying) is crumbling. A no-brainer (The fix, not him although...) would be to start hiring workers nation-wide to save our streets, and highways, and bridges, and on and on.

Disaster on the clock!

The amount of architects and planners alone would take a chunk out of the unemployment numbers and therein is the problem.

Allowing anything to help the economy while the right wing controls the purse strings of the House and President Obama is still in office is anathema.

To paraphrase Senator McJowls, aka Mitch McConnell, an elected official sworn to help America in return for a huge undeserved salary; free health care; retirement funds for himself and family and exceptional perks far beyond his worth, “We simply cannot give this pretender a win.”

So there goes infrastructure repair!

And with it any hope of fixing America.

But I am not just talking about the roads anymore.  Now I speak of the entire experiment that is America.

One political party gets their marching orders only from the wealthiest of the country. They have now brazenly taken to fixing elections so even when the masses rise up against their terroristic-like tactics it will not be enough since their votes will not be counted.

And many on the right feel that is as it should be.  "The poor made their own beds and chose to be poor so their votes should not count!"

It is the ruling class that will decide when and where workers will be hired and what those workers should do.

There are many public works programs and ideas such as alternative energy as a way to ensure that the world as we know it will still exist in 50 years that are being blocked by the ruling class and their puppets in Congress.

They will not give in unless and until we bow to their superior intellect and allow them to reap any profits from any new industry.
We are now used to paying for luggage when we fly but until we divest ourselves of the evil and brain-dead, dead weight baggage in Congress we will never get anywhere!

The Scorpion Effect Vis-a-Vie the 2012 Election

I’m sure you all know the story of the scorpion and the frog but just in case:

The scorpion must get across a river but it does not swim.

The frog is at the edge of the river and the scorpion asks for a ride.

The worried frog says, “But if I give you a ride you will sting me and I will die.”

And the scorpion points out that, “If I were to sting you then we would both die and therefore it would be silly for me to do so.”

Hearing this logic the frog relents.

But halfway across the river the scorpion indeed stings the frog and as they drown the frog asks incredulously “Why?”

“Because I’m a scorpion,” said the stinger “and that’s what scorpions do!”

The above story explains this year’s Presidential election.

How so you might ask.

How is the stinging of the poor unsuspecting naïve frog the same thing as an entire electorate voting to choose the next President?

I’m so pleased you asked.

Hop into the blogosphere time machine and I will explain.

In the year 2000 there was a close vote between former Vice President Al Gore and his Republican opponent G W Bush.

After the voting was complete there was no clear winner. And although it appeared that some irregularities were involved that could have far reaching implications the process of recounting votes was halted and the decision of who would be the President of the United States was taken out of the hands of the voters and given to the courts.

But not just any court.

It was handed over to a conservative think tank organization also known as the Supreme Court of the United States.

This particular political action group of robed ‘deciders’ was stocked with supporters hand picked for just this type of situation. But they could not do a thing unless they were called into action. And that was as unprecedented as, well as blatantly stopping a recount to appoint a winner.

Luckily they were handed the task by a woman, ONE WOMAN who was not-so-secretly in love with her boss who just so happened to be Jeb Bush, brother of Georgie and the eventual recipient of the crown.

The president in 2000 was decided not by the majority of the 105 million plus voters but by a 5 to 4 predetermined vote of conservative supporters nullifying and circumventing the wishes of nearly an entire nation.

Granted the vote was close but Mr. Gore with 48.4% did in fact beat his opponent who garnered only 47.8% but in America as in our Congress it is not always the majority that rules.

Now let’s travel ahead four years and two wars later and review what transpired in the next major election.

In 2004 the conservatives were somewhat afraid to do the same thing as they did in 2000 so they started using voting models more seriously and found what are now quite commonly known as ‘swing states.’

These are electoral gold mines that above all can ‘swing’ a national election in favor of one guy, or gal over another.

And they found Ohio.

History and a keen eye will show how they once again circumvented rules and fair political action (now there’s an oxymoron for you) and stole yet another election for the inept war mongering criminal team of Dubya & Darth Cheney.

So now we are back home in good old 2012 and are heading into another Presidential election that could very well decide the make up of that formerly fair and balanced Supreme Court for many years to come.

But the scorpion has now become so secure in its tactic of stinging America and stealing elections that it is brazenly and openly doing so with every slimy step.

It seems to have figured out how to kill off the middle class while not drowning itself.

And to prove how secure they are in their winning ways if they can pull it off this time they will have placed a President in the White House who is, by their own words the worst candidate ever to run for the Oval Office.

So how can they do this?

Will they bring back Katherine Harris?

Could they possibly hypnotize an entire nation into believing that suddenly Willard is not a rat?

No this time it’s in your face and personal!

The stinger is out and they have no intention of hiding it at all!

If you are or have shown yourself to be a Democrat or are merely leaning in the direction of voting for a Democrat you will have obstacles thrown in front of you every step of the way to the voting booth.

Voter suppression is such an anathema to our country and its tenet of freedom as to be considered a terrorist act and yet the Republican Party, their Governors and their fringe groups are all conspiring to do just that!

And doing it while admitting what their plan is!

Veterans of foreign wars who volunteered and risked their lives to secure freedom for America are being thrown off the voter roles after voting continuously for 60 years merely because they are registered; admitted; or in a demographic that assumes they are Democrats.
In some Republican controlled states such as Texas, Bush's former 'clearing brush stomping grounds,' the unabashed BS of the RW goes as far as to disallow valid student ID cards from colleges and universities but accept gun permits as legitimate identification for voting!
Obviously the right wing has figured out that intelligent students are more likely to vote Democratic than their gun toting beer drinking low life neighbors with tattoos touting second amendment rights.
Of course none of the fears these champions of concealed weapons have been shown to be true under President Obama but since when did truth and logic enter into a right winger's brain.

If Willard Mitt Romney were a better candidate; or even just a man of the people with a sense of what the country needs; or if he even gave a damn about the plight of the majority of Americans then he would have a chance in a fair election of taking the brass ring that is the Presidency.

But he is not!

And as much a puppet as W was Mitt is not even worthy of that insulting label. He is merely a front; an empty shirt; a figurehead to place in the office to do the bidding of his owners of the corporate world.

But the fact that he is undeserving of being on the same ballot as President Obama is not the point of this post.

The point of THIS post is the scorpions that are Karl Rove and the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson and all the rest of the individuals who for their own personal reasons need to have their hand picked stooge as the leader of the free world are fixing to fix yet another American election.

This must not be allowed!

Please Remember in November and do not give the scorpion another ride!

Pent up Thoughts

Great news!  I have a job
Terrible News!  I have a job!
Okay, it's great news for me but if anyone out there wants to read my rants they have to sign up for Twitter and follow me there.  You see with a job comes responsibility.  And with responsibility comes time management.  And I have far less time to put my thoughts down on paper, uh, make that E-Paper.
As a result I think in 140 character sound-bites fit for the world of Twitter.
There is some good in writing only 140 character 'tweets' since that is around the attention span of many people these days, certainly that is the far end of attention span of Fox news viewers!
Seriously, can you ever believe that anyone who watches Fox or listens to that incredibly evil moron Limp Balls on the radio has an attention span long enough to figure out they are lying???
But for now I would like to offer a few views - Headline-like only as to what has been going on in our world these days.
Osama is dead!  Obama did it but Bushies are trying to spin it their way.  Condoleeeeeeeeza says he deserves a great deal of credit.
AGREED!
Because if that most inept of Presidents and his gang of asinine idiots AKA the gang who couldn't shoot straight had gotten the evil bastard then Obama wouldn't have had to!

Our friends in the Pakistani government were so surprised that Osama was living in luxury right under their noses!

NOT!

They were only surprised that we finally figured it out!

Oil prices have risen and then fallen but gas prices have only gone up!

If you are then you haven't been paying attention so let me tell you in quick terms:
CONGRESS IS OWNED BY BIG BUSINESS AND ESPECIALLY BIG OIL!
If Exxon wants to make billions and not pay taxes how else would they get away with it?

The Republic Party wants to create jobs - BULLSHIT!
They want to create more wealth for their owners in big business and themselves.
If they were really interested in the American middle class, AKA humans then they might not have targeted the health care reform bill for repeal and Planned Parenthood and National Public Radio and many other issues that concern women's health as their first priorities after taking control of the House!!!  Obviously if they had told the electorate that was their first order of business they would not have gotten a majority!
In fact they might not have gotten ANY VOTES and they knew it!!!!!
I hope all those idiots out there who were fooled into voting for the Republic Party are ready for health care menus because:

The first and main item on these hypocrites' agenda was to basically take out any group that might lean toward supporting the Democratic Party!

Google the utterly evil idiot Scott Walker and the rest of the evil bastards in the Republic Party and see what they have been up to since last November.
But I'm not bitter - I have a job!
I am one of the lucky ones.  I am not making nearly as much as I used to but in today's world of corporate owned government that's to be expected.
Still I want to see 15,000,000 other wonderful and deserving Americans get lucky as well.
If we as a nation can understand that all people must have gainful employment in order for society to work, not just the CEOs and their $9,000,000 average yearly salary (That's right, it's up to that now - look it up!) then perhaps we can reclaim our status as the greatest nation in the world.  But for now we are just treading water slightly ahead of third world status.
I am not advocating class warfare because frankly I cannot figure out who to fight!  You see, the Republic Party HAS NO CLASS!

Fair Marriage

The recent decision by the Obama administration on how to defend attacks on the ridiculous 'defense of marriage act' has brought out far more than 12 angry men, and women.  He stated that he will ask the Justice Department to not rigourously defend the law should it reach the upper levels of our court system.
Naturally we expect many people to have comments on every subject and this one brought out much anger.  One letter to the editor asked us to think how we would feel if President Bush had chosen which laws to follow and which ones to break.  That one caused me to shake my head and create this rant, one that should not be necessary in America in the year 2011!
This is a copy of what I posted on Newsday.com:

"There will always be at least two sides to every story and this one is certainly no exception. But each side must adhere to the facts or their arguments will fail.

President Obama is not choosing which laws he will uphold but rather expediently deciding which ones his administration will not vigorously defend due to their inherent unconstitutionality. Naturally this non-defense policy will only kick in should the conflict reach the Supreme Court! Until then any laws of the land will be followed by this President.
As for one writer's claim about President Bush and our reaction if he had chosen to ignore laws, IS HE KIDDING? Did the writer live in a cave for the 8 years under the rogue Presidency of Mr. Bush and his operatives?  Please go back and look into Patriot Act and dig a little deeper than the misleading title.
Gay men and women who live in America and follow the rules and laws that govern our country have been singled out for ridicule and discriminated against their entire lives! They pay taxes and contribute to our economy in precisely the same way as the so-called straight community. It is time to be straight with them and stop this ridiculous demonization.
Gay bashers should stop and remember the (slightly altered) famous line from Hamlet, "Me thinks they doth protest too much." Then they should look within themselves for reasons why.
Gay marriage does not affect my marriage in any way shape or form!  In fact allowing that segment of our citizenry the same pain and pleasure the rest of us experience might prove to be a double edged sword for them but it is the only way to go in a truly free and democratic society."
 
As for the country in general and the adherence to the laws of the land I would like the people who are against 'gay marriage' because it is the current law of the land to answer the following question:
WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF THAT SUPREME COURT DECISION ENTITLED ROE v. WADE?
See if you can remember Dr. George Tiller, the man who was shot to death IN HIS CHURCH.
Get back to me on that one before you hop up on your 'holier than thou' soapbox with your concealed multi-capacity assault weapons and your praise for the murder of innocent law abiding citizens.

Laws vs. Records

One of the main differences between the two things in the title of this piece is simply that records were made to be broken.

There was no law that said Hank Aaron could not break the Babe’s record.  And there was also no law to stop Barry Bonds from returning the favor to the Brave’s number 44 a few years later although he may have had some medicinal help.

But of course laws are also broken, especially when they are considered unjust by the breaking party as in a revolution.

One could argue that our nation was born as a result of a treasonous act breaking the law of our good old Mother England.  Naturally after fighting the war for Independence and winning the act was no longer considered illegal, at least not in this country.

We’ve come a long way since that fight in the 1770s and we’ve written many laws so that our government, of, by, and for the people may go forward with everyone’s best interest in mind.

But what of the people who write those laws?

Should they not be held to the same standards as the rest of us?

This week we learned that the Bush administration committed a few more illegal acts than were originally disclosed.  They used funds for personal and political gain that were clearly supposed to kept for other use.

We all remember the Nixon Frost interview and the famous statement by the late President that, “If the President does it it’s not illegal!”

That should and did cause the buzzers to go off all across this land as absurd.

In fact many people feel that even murder is legal, as long as you don’t get caught.

We also learned this week that two of our Supreme Court justices have engaged in, if not illegal then certainly immoral or questionable behavior.

Last year Justice Alito lit up the television screen with his famous or rather infamous stupid action of mouthing the words, “Not True”  during the President’s State of the Union speech.  He was almost right, he is not a true Justice!
This year Mr. Alito has said he may not attend the speech.  Oh please, pretty please!

By the time you read this we will know if he kept his promise but frankly who needs him there?

He like the two other justices making headline news this week has already shown his true feelings about the Democratic Party and President Obama in particular.

When Justice Antonin Scalia decided to go behind closed doors and give a keynote speech at a Tea Party rally he did not break any laws but he clearly acted in a manner unfit for his position.

Although the invitations also eventually went out to Democrats it was clear that was done to appease and stop the growing furor over a stupid act.

When we found out that for the past decade Justice Thomas deliberately left off his wife’s income from his financial disclosure statement he did not break the law but he clearly acted in a manner unfit for his position.

In the case of Mr. Scalia he did not nor would he ever apologize for his strange actions.

But in the case of Mr. Thomas even his excuse rings of falsehoods.  He stated that the rules on the financial disclosure forms confused him and that’s why he made the omission.

But he had been listing his wife’s income in the years prior to his more recent lack of knowledge.

And are we to understand that the Justice is claiming ignorance on such a simple point of law?  That is troublesome on so many levels.

Could his sudden lapse in correct filing have something to do with the fact that his activist wife is a staunch Tea Party representative dead set against all things Obama?

Is it possible that her income from the Conservative think tanks would cause some eyebrows to be raised among the media and in the political circles?

Where there’s smoke big guy!

In return for their lifetime appointment Justices above all must be impartial.  While there is no current precedent to change that lifetime position an exception should and must be made in cases of clear impropriety!

Judges are always recusing themselves from hearing cases they have personal knowledge of and surely they will not preside over a case in which they are involved.  It is not easy to be impartial but that’s why they get the big bucks, and the status.  If they can not live up to the simple ‘follow the rules’ of their jobs then how can we have faith in their rulings?

Perhaps Justice Thomas should recuse himself from the bench altogether and join his wife in her Conservative endeavors more openly.  Of course doing so will probably make his wife less valuable to the cause.

Politicians and judges are human and prone to the same human frailties as the rest of us.  Temptation is always hanging around and rearing its ugly head.  The best leaders are the ones who can resist that imposter and continue doing their jobs, the jobs for which they were hired or elected.

But if they cannot perform their tasks in a fair and unbiased manner they must step down or face the consequences.

We are still a free nation with freedoms abounding as long as we don’t break the law.

So while I hate to sound like a broken record I must come back to the original thought about laws and whether or not they are made to be broken like records.

I guess when the politicians and judges have the power to write the laws all they have to do is change them when they need to do so, so as to not be caught breaking them.

Unfortunately they’ll change them back before you or I have a chance of using the same loophole.
